the ironic smock dress

This was the last item I managed to make before the stroke of midnight Christmas Eve day when my sewing machine magically turned into a paperweight for the remainder of the year.

It's a version of this smock with about four inches added to the length. Right now it works as dress and hopefully the addition will extend the life of it into the preschool years as I also went one size up from what I had been making. I took a bit more care in the finishing this time, taping the neck seam and rolling the bottom hem. I also tried adding elastic to the bottom of the sleeves as called for in the pattern. It was an unpopular decision and has since been removed by decree of Miss Loody Loo who is not yet two but can boo hoo with the best of them.

I'm particularly pleased with the recycled brown linen which is from a skirt I found for $1 -- as in one whole dollar -- on a sale rack at the mall. Not where I usually do my fabric shopping but, one dollar, for bona fide linen? You bet. I took the largest size they had, which ironically is also the size I wear. Sigh... note to self, no more cookies.

The snail fabric is just plain fun as no one would call the Loo snail slow in anything she does. She's a food bolter and a cat chaser who hops up and down when made to wait. Perhaps the snails will be a gentle reminder to take things a bit more leisurely.

Yeah, right...
