Book Club Monday :: Basic Style

Ha! Let me say right off the bat, I love coats. And coat patterns specifically, so I may be a bit biased here, but "Basic Style" ISBN #978-4-418-05143-4 / ISBN 4418051430, is not basic. Classic, yes, but basic implies boring and these coats are not boring. Even the first half dozen or so jersey designs have some finesse and sophisticated color work going on.
A padded field coat, now that's a classic.
A wool dress coat -- hard to get more classic than that.

Unless, of course, you count duffle coats and pea coats.

There are some less classic takes in here too. I'm particularly taken with this variation on a short poncho/cloak, which I've already traced and now just need to find some appropriately shaggy wool.
Not all the projects in here are jackets -- there are some pullovers too-- but no pants or skirts, shirts or dresses. The pull out patterns are ingeniously condensed which makes them a smidge harder to grasp at first but also a beautifully clever thing to see, and the instructions are clean and concise. Sizes range from 100 cm to 130 cm, and just in time for fall. Swoon...
