Book Club :: nani IRO

nani iro cover

I haven't had a Japanese Craft book post in a while so I started sifting through the piles to see what I might find. I can't believe I haven't written about nani IRO (ISBN 9784579111831), so let's correct that oversight right now.

Really, it's all about the fabrics designed by Naomi Ito, especially her ethereal double gauze. Gorgeous stuff and neither of these designs below would look quite as interesting done in something more ordinary.

Even her more subtle fabrics have a beautiful presence. The pillows and child's shirt takes advantage of some border print placement but the woman's dress is simple enough to let the print be the focus.

And some designs in here are so lovely, they don't need a print at all. I would make this in a heartbeat if it wouldn't end up looking like a muumuu on rather round me.

This ever so sophisticated book is a step up from the average Japanese sewing book. There are a few more numbered written steps, but still most instruction is of the detailed drawing variety. There are pull out patterns to trace and mine also came with an errata sheet for the child's border print shirt, so beware of that. Sizes range 90 to 110 cm for kids and Japanese S,M,L for women.

I love the simplicity of the patterns....with the focus being on the fabric!

Doesn't "Nani Iro" mean "What color?" (nana-what, iro- color)

If they had patterns in jumbo size I would so be looking into this! lol

Gorgeous! I love the prints too. I wish I were brave enough to plunge into one of these books and make something. I'm a bit apprehensive.

I never get tired of Japanese fashion. I think the last dress has nice lines and is more tailored than some of the more smock-like designs, so go for it! I have no clue what a Japanese S-M-L would be though--0-2-4? That lets me out....

alittlebitofscrap -- If you're interested in the style but feel more comfortable starting in English, you could try these two books, recently translated:
Linen Cotton Wool
Patchwork Style.

As for sizing, I'm pretty sure I'm up to Japanese "Godzilla" :)

O o o! I'm drooling over here. Those fabrics are amazing! And I love the simplicity of the pieces. Question - where do you find all of these amazing japanese crafts books?

And those farmers market photos on your last post are incredible. Steroids is right.
